India is a home to 30 cr people under extreme poverty. According to UN people earning less than 1 dollar are categorized under extreme poverty. Two third of the world’s extreme poverty population live in India, china, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Congo.

India which has a population of 125 crore adopted Millennium Development Goal in 2000 to eliminate poverty, illiteracy, hunger, poor health issues.

Millennium Development Goal will expire in December. MDG helped in poverty reduction to 49.4% in 1994 to 42% in 2005 and 32.7% in 2010. We have a long way to go. Comparing to other countries we are lagging behind. China made a great progress when it came to poverty reduction, in china poverty came down from 60% in 1990 to 16% in 2005 and 12% in 2010.

Once the MDG expires India will be on sustainable development goal (SDG). UN has a set a goal to make countries free from poverty and Indian has to speed up on the challenge. The challenge is about equality, empowerment of women, facility of education, health care.
