Is Puli going to be a hit ?

Vijay has been a popular star in Tamil Nadu. He is as famous, successful and popular as Surya, Ajith, Rajinikanth.

His recent Pan-India release Puli was supposed to have approximately 3500 screens, out of which 1000 screens are from North India. Puli was one of a most awaited recent release starring Vijay, Shruti Haasan and Hansika Motwani as his female lead, Sridevi and sudeep.

Even if  an income tax raid that started from 7 am today in connection to suspected unaccounted money transactions involving the star and film makers, there was no interruption in it’s national as well as international release except few early morning shows that were cancelled in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu IT team consisting of 120 officials raided 35 premises including Vijay’s residence, film producer and financier and director’s residences. Amid the raids on 1st of October the movie got released in other screens too.

In addition to its Tamil version the movie was also released in Telugu and Hindi. As per most of the reviewer puli failed to pull the crowd on the first day, some say Chimbu Deven’s fantasy film puli lacked a strong story line as well as great script.  A fine Cinematography justifies a fantasy driven mythical era. The story is based on how Vijay (Maru Dheeran) goes to Sridevi’s kingdom to rescue his love interest Pavazhamani (Shruti Haasan) from prison. The chemistry between Vijay and Shruti was not very convincing for the audience. Puli wanted to be an answer to Baahaubali but somehow this fantasy fun movie failed to achieve the feats that Baahaubali achieved.

First half of the movie seems little slow with usual hero heroine romance, songs and jokes while the second half welcomes an evil queen who puts Pavazhamani (Shruti Haasan) and compels the hero of the movie to come to wage a war against the evil queen and her kingdom. Sudeep plays an important role. Puli has good number of fight scenes to capture audience attention. The movie very cleverly casts Vijay, a commercially successful actor in Tamil Nadu while having a huge fan base in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Sridevi and Shurti Hassan are very popular in Bollywood while Sudeep is popular star from Karnataka.  Puli’s multi star-cast is a deliberate effort to pull audience from different states.

Even though U-rated Puli branded itself as a complete family movie especially targeting children as audience it has some violent fight and lynching scenes.

Puli boasts over its VFX. Some of its VFX work seems convincing while some are not up to the mark.
